Piranha fish Pygocentrus natterery
The first tank of the exhibition hosts the famous Piranha fish. This species lives in Siuth America's rivers and particularly it inhabits the river basin of the Amazon River to Paraguay.
A Piranha can grow to a typical lenhth of 15-25 centimeters. Piranha mainly feed on the meat of fish and their extremely pointed teeth are used as arrowheads by the indigenous populations of the Amazon.
Pacu or Herbivorous Piranha Colossoma macropomum
The first tank hosts also the Pacu, a omnivorous species that lives in South America. The Pacu generally prefers seeds, plants and fruits, but may also feed on insects and shellfish. Its shape resembles that of Piranha and it can grow up to one meter in length and weigh up to 40 kilograms. Due its eating habits, this species is also called Herbivorous Piranha.
