A great water resource from which Acquario di Cala Gonone can draw all the sea water for its tanks is called Tyrrhenian Sea.
The Aquarium has water pump-system that draws water directly from the beach not far away from the building. This system guaranties the high water quality, very important for animals like gorgonians and deep sea crustaceans.
However, the water management is not based on the 24 hours draw – a highly expensive method which doesn’t guarantee the necessary stability of chemical and physical parameters – but the Aquarium uses “semi – opened” system. That means that the water in the tanks is always the same and it is replaced once a month. The partial replacement of the water in individual tanks, depending on the case, is done drawing the water directly from the sea.
